Systematic position: The spotted spittlebug (Aphrophora stictia) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. This insect is widely recognized for the characteristic frothy, saliva-like mass that the nymphs produce to protect themselves from predators and desiccation while they feed on plant sap.

Affected crops: This pest is a polyphage, meaning it infests a wide range of host plants. It commonly affects ornamental shrubs, perennial flowers, grasses, and occasionally young orchard trees. Nymphs prefer soft, succulent tissues, making seedlings and the new growth of ornamental plants the most vulnerable parts of the host.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. The insect overwinters as eggs laid within plant tissues or bark. In the spring, nymphs emerge and immediately begin secreting the foamy substance. They undergo several molts within this protected environment before transforming into winged adults, which are capable of jumping and flying to new host plants during the summer months.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary damage is caused by the nymphs, which extract sap from the phloem. This feeding process deprives the plant of essential nutrients and fluids, leading to stunted growth, leaf curling, and yellowing.
