Apogonia clypeator

Apogonia clypeator is a beetle species belonging to the family Scarabaeidae (order Coleoptera). Known as a significant agricultural pest, this insect is widely distributed across various tropical and subtropical zones, where its activity poses a serious threat to multiple crop systems and plantations.

The host range of this pest is extensive, affecting both economically vital industrial crops and local food supplies. Major crops susceptible to infestation include rice, tea, peanuts, various beans, and leguminous crops. Additionally, nursery trees and ornamental plants are often targeted by adult beetles during their feeding cycles.

The life cycle involves distinct stages occurring both in the soil and on the aerial parts of plants. Adult beetles are nocturnal, spending the daylight hours buried in the soil or hiding under debris. The larval stage develops entirely underground, feeding on the roots and organic matter, which hides them from common aerial pest control measures.

The damage caused by Apogonia clypeator is twofold. Adults inflict significant foliar injury, consuming leaf tissue and leaving only the skeleton of veins, which severely hinders plant growth. Larvae cause more insidious damage by pruning root systems, which results in stunted development, yellowing, and potentially the death of the host plant due to reduced water and nutrient uptake.
