Systematic position. The Florida leaf weevil (Artipus floridanus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a significant pest primarily recognized for its impact on citrus orchards in the southeastern United States, particularly within the Florida region, where environmental conditions support its year-round activity and population growth.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are citrus trees, including oranges, grapefruits, and limes. However, Artipus floridanus is a polyphagous insect that also infests a wide range of other plants, including various ornamental shrubs, avocado, mango, and several legume crops, making it a versatile and persistent pest in diverse agroecosystems.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females deposit clusters of eggs on the foliage, which are held together by a sticky secretion. Upon hatching, the larvae drop to the ground and burrow into the soil. They spend the majority of their development cycle in the soil environment, where they feed on the fine root systems of host plants before pupating and emerging as adults.

Nature of damage and economic impact. Adult weevils cause visible damage by feeding on the edges of leaves, creating characteristic notched patterns that can lead to extensive defoliation if left unmanaged. The larval stage is particularly destructive, as root feeding reduces the tree's ability to absorb water and nutrients, causing stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and increased susceptibility to environmental stress or secondary pathogens.

Control measures. Effective management of Artipus floridanus relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to reduce population pressure:

  • Regular monitoring of adult emergence during spring and summer months.
  • Foliar application of insecticides targeted at adults before they initiate significant egg-laying.
