Oriental persimmon scale

Asiacornococcus kaki

Description

Systematic position: The Oriental persimmon scale, scientifically known as Asiacornococcus kaki, is a member of the Eriococcidae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is a specialized pest that has adapted specifically to the physiology of certain fruit-bearing tree species, causing economic losses in fruit production.

Host plants and damage: The primary host for this scale is the persimmon tree (Diospyros kaki). The insect attaches itself to the bark of twigs, branches, and trunks, piercing the plant tissues to feed on sap. This persistent feeding weakens the tree, leading to stunted shoot growth, premature leaf senescence, and a drastic reduction in fruit quality and yield.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of several stages, including egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. Adult females remain stationary, covered by a protective scale that acts as a shield against environmental stressors and many contact pesticides. The crawler stage is the most mobile phase, facilitating the dispersal of the pest across the canopy and to neighboring trees.

Symptoms of infestation: Infestations are characterized by the appearance of dense colonies of scales that resemble small, hardened bumps on the bark. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew by the insects promotes the growth of sooty mold. This black, fungal coating covers the leaves and branches, significantly inhibiting photosynthesis and gas exchange, which further stresses the host tree.

Control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as pruning and destroying heavily infested branches, are essential for reducing pest populations. Chemical control should be timed to coincide with the crawler stage, as they lack the protective armor of adults and are highly susceptible to systemic and contact insecticides applied to the foliage.

  • Application of horticultural oils in the early spring to smother overwintering insects.
  • Use of systemic insecticides during peak crawler activity.
  • Proper orchard sanitation, including removal of dead bark and infected wood.
  • Monitoring of tree health to ensure optimal vigor and pest resistance.
