Chinese scale
Aspidiotus chinensis
Description
The Chinese scale (Aspidiotus chinensis) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is considered a serious threat to various economic crops and ornamental plants, often subjected to strict regulatory controls in international trade due to its potential for rapid spread.
This pest is a polyphagous insect that infests a wide range of woody hosts. Key plants susceptible to damage include citrus, tea plants, walnuts, and various ornamentals such as magnolia and camellia. The scale typically settles on the bark of branches and trunks, though it may also infest fruit, causing direct aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plant.
The life cycle of the Chinese scale is characterized by a sedentary adult female stage protected by a hard, waxy scale cover. The dispersal occurs through the first-instar nymphs, commonly referred to as "crawlers." These crawlers are the only mobile stage and are responsible for moving to new feeding sites on the same plant or dispersing to neighboring trees. Depending on regional climate, the insect can produce several overlapping generations per year.
The damage caused by Aspidiotus chinensis results from the depletion of plant sap, which weakens the host's vitality. Symptoms include bark cracking, localized tissue necrosis, chlorosis, and premature foliage drop. Severe infestations can lead to the stunting of young shoots, significant reduction in fruit quality, and eventual tree death if left untreated by agricultural interventions.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for controlling this scale. Preventive measures include the rigorous inspection of nursery stock and the removal of heavily infested plant parts. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the crawler stage using systemic insecticides. Additionally, the application of horticultural oils during the dormant season is a standard practice to suppress wintering populations and manage infestations effectively.
