Coconut scale

The coconut scale (Aspidiotus destructor) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a sap-sucking insect characterized by a protective, flattened scale that covers the body of the insect, making it highly resistant to many standard contact insecticides.

This species is known to infest a wide array of host plants, most notably coconuts, bananas, papayas, and various citrus species. It is a major economic pest in tropical and subtropical regions, often colonizing the undersides of leaves, fruits, and young stems where it extracts essential nutrients.

The biology of Aspidiotus destructor involves several stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. The crawler stage is critical as it is the primary means of dispersal within the host or to adjacent plants. Once a suitable site is found, the crawler settles and secretes the characteristic scale, remaining sedentary for the rest of its life.

Damage caused by this pest is extensive. Direct feeding leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and leaf necrosis. Heavy infestations cause premature leaf drop and can significantly reduce fruit quality and overall plant vigor, which often leads to total crop failure if left unmanaged.
