Excisus scale
Aspidiotus excisus
Description
Systematic position: The Excisus scale (Aspidiotus excisus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. These insects are characterized by a protective waxy covering (the scale) that serves as a robust defense mechanism against environmental stressors and many traditional chemical treatments.
Host plants: This pest is known for its wide host range, primarily targeting tropical and subtropical plant species. It is frequently observed on various types of palms, banana plants, orchids, and citrus, often becoming a significant pest in greenhouses and conservatory environments where climate conditions are favorable year-round.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg, crawler, nymphal, and adult stages. The crawlers are the only mobile stage and are responsible for the dispersal of the population. Once they find a suitable feeding site, they insert their mouthparts into the plant tissue, secrete their protective scale, and transition into a stationary life stage.
Damage and economic significance: The insects extract sap from plant tissues, which leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and premature leaf senescence. Massive infestations result in the weakening of the plant's structural integrity. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew often encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with photosynthesis.
Management strategies: Controlling this pest requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.
- Regular inspection of plant foliage and stems for early detection.
- Application of systemic insecticides that target the insect during the crawler stage.
- Use of horticultural oils to suffocate the insects under their scales.
- Mechanical removal of infected plant parts if the infestation is localized.
- Strict quarantine procedures to prevent the introduction of new pests on imported stock.
