Ataenius strigatus
Ataenius strigatus
Description
Ataenius strigatus is a member of the scarab beetle family (Scarabaeidae), classified within the order Coleoptera. These small beetles are commonly found inhabiting the thatch and upper soil layer of managed turfgrass. While they are often overlooked due to their size and cryptic behavior, they can become significant pests when their populations reach high densities.
The primary hosts for this insect are various species of turfgrass, frequently affecting golf course fairways, greens, and residential lawns. The damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage, which feeds on the grass roots. This feeding habit weakens the root system, causing the turf to lose its vigor and turn brown, eventually leading to dead patches.
The life cycle of the species typically consists of egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. In warmer climates, it can complete multiple generations within a single growing season. Adults overwinter in protected areas, such as soil or leaf litter, and emerge in the spring to lay eggs in the soil, initiating the life cycle for the new generation.
Typical signs of infestation include patches of yellowing or dying grass that appear withered. Because the larvae consume the roots, the turf can often be pulled up easily like a carpet, exposing the white, C-shaped grubs beneath the surface. Severe infestations are often noticed only after significant damage has occurred, making early detection crucial for maintaining turf quality.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize damage and chemical usage. Recommended control practices include:
- Regular soil monitoring during spring and summer to track larval population counts.
- Maintaining healthy turf through proper fertilization, irrigation, and aeration practices.
- Using biological control agents like entomopathogenic nematodes as a sustainable alternative.
- Applying targeted insecticides only when threshold levels are exceeded.
