Sugarcane scale

Systematic position: Aulacaspis madiunensis is classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is recognized as a significant pest of sugarcane, having evolved to thrive on specific hosts and cause detrimental effects on industrial agricultural production worldwide.

Affected crops: The primary host for this pest is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). However, it has been observed on various wild grass species, which serve as alternative hosts, allowing the pest to persist in the field environment even when the main crop is harvested.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, crawler, and adult stages. Females are sessile and protected by a hard scale, which creates a significant barrier to control. Males are winged and mobile, facilitating reproduction. Rapid generations under warm tropical conditions contribute to the pest's ability to reach outbreak levels quickly.

Damage and economic impact: Feeding occurs on the stems of the sugarcane plant. By extracting plant sap, the insect weakens the stalks, leading to stunted growth, reduced internode length, and a significant drop in sucrose content. High infestations can lead to the death of young shoots and severely compromise the overall harvest yield.

Control measures: Management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This involves the use of clean planting material, maintaining soil fertility to enhance plant vigor, and the judicious application of systemic insecticides.
