Systematic position. Aulacaspis neospinosa is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Diaspididae family, commonly known as armored scale insects. This pest is characterized by the secretion of a hard, protective covering composed of wax and exuviae, which shields the insect from predators, environmental stressors, and standard pesticide applications.

Host plants. This species primarily infests a variety of ornamental woody plants and shrubs. It is often found in botanical gardens and nurseries, where it can rapidly spread among closely planted specimens. The pest is particularly problematic in warmer climates where the absence of harsh winters allows for continuous development throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves several stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. Adult females remain sessile for their entire lives, feeding on the plant's vascular tissues. The crawler stage is the primary dispersal phase, during which nymphs migrate to new feeding sites on the host plant or are passively transported by wind or human activity to adjacent vegetation.

Damage and pest status. Aulacaspis neospinosa feeds by inserting specialized mouthparts into plant tissues and extracting sap. This leads to nutrient depletion, localized chlorosis, bark cracking, and branch dieback. In cases of heavy infestation, the cumulative stress significantly reduces the aesthetic and physiological health of the plant, often leading to premature leaf drop or plant death.

Control measures. Management requires a multi-faceted approach centered on early detection and integrated pest management (IPM). Key strategies include:

• Systemic insecticides that are ingested by the pest during sap feeding.
