Cycad aulacaspis scale

Cycad aulacaspis scale (Aulacaspis yasumatsui) is a devastating pest within the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. Originally native to Southeast Asia, it has become a global threat to ornamental cycad populations, particularly in nurseries, residential landscapes, and specialized botanical collections.

This insect primarily infests cycad species, most notably members of the genus Cycas. Unlike many other scale insects, Aulacaspis yasumatsui colonizes not only the leaves and petioles but also the trunks and even the roots of the plants, creating multi-layered infestations that are difficult to eradicate.

The biology of this scale is characterized by high reproductive rates. Females deposit hundreds of eggs under a protective wax cover, and the resulting crawlers are easily dispersed by wind, animals, or human activity. In optimal conditions, they can produce multiple generations per year, leading to exponential population growth.

Damage symptoms manifest as extensive white crusts of scale insects covering the host plant. They suck phloem sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients. Infested cycads show severe yellowing, chlorosis, and wilting of the fronds, eventually resulting in the death of the entire plant if untreated.

Management strategies require an integrated approach. Effective control involves:

• Strict quarantine measures for imported plant material.
• Physical removal of heavily infested fronds.
• Application of systemic insecticides that are taken up by the plant tissue.
• Biological control through the introduction of specific parasitoid wasps, such as Coccobius fulvus or Cybocephalus binotatus beetles.
