Assam leaf chafer

Systematic position. The Assam leaf chafer (Autoserica assamensis) is classified within the order Coleoptera, belonging to the family Scarabaeidae. As a member of the subfamily Melolonthinae, it shares morphological and behavioral characteristics with other major scarab pests, which are widely recognized for their impact on both cultivated and wild flora.

Host plants. This species is a recognized polyphagous pest. It infests a broad variety of botanical families, including economically important crops such as tea, various fruit orchards, and diverse vegetable crops. The larvae cause extensive damage to the root systems, while adults are known to cause damage to the foliage of many host plants.

Biology and life cycle. The development of this insect follows a complete metamorphosis (holometabolism). The lifecycle spans from eggs laid in moist, organic-rich soil to subterranean larvae, a pupal stage, and finally the winged adult beetle. The larvae generally require one or more years to complete their development depending on local climatic conditions and soil temperature.

Damage patterns and economic impact. The primary damage is attributed to the larvae, which feed on root hairs and main roots, disrupting water and nutrient transport. This often leads to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and plant collapse. Adult beetles feed on leaves, leaving irregular holes or skeletons, which weakens the plant's vigor and significantly reduces agricultural output.

Protection measures. Effective management of this pest requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• performing deep soil tillage to disrupt larval development and expose them to predators;
• using light traps during the peak adult flight period to reduce local populations;
• applying granular insecticides to the soil to protect young seedlings;
• integrating biological control agents such as entomopathogenic fungi or beneficial nematodes into the management plan.
