The acorn weevil (genus Balanobius, often classified within Curculio) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These beetles are highly specialized pests known for targeting the seeds of oak trees, representing a significant concern for silviculture and forest management.
These insects primarily infest oak stands, where they feed on acorns. By targeting the nuts, they severely impact the reproductive success of oak forests, making it difficult for the stands to regenerate naturally without human intervention.
The life cycle of the acorn weevil is closely tied to the host tree's phenology. The female uses her long, needle-like snout to bore into the developing acorn and deposit an egg. The larva then feeds on the cotyledons, hollowing out the nut. Once developed, the larva exits the acorn by creating a characteristic circular hole, enters the soil, and prepares for pupation.
