Kola nut weevil

Balanogastris kolae

Description

Systematic position. The kola nut weevil (Balanogastris kolae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is a highly specialized pest that poses a significant threat to kola plantations in the tropical regions where these trees are cultivated.

Crops damaged. The primary hosts for this insect are the fruits of trees within the genus Cola, specifically Cola nitida and Cola acuminata. The pest is capable of devastating a large portion of the harvest, causing damage both while the fruits are maturing on the tree and during the subsequent storage of the kola nuts.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the weevil is closely synchronized with the phenology of kola fruit development. Adult females puncture the fruit skin to deposit eggs directly into the seeds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the kernel, where they feed on the embryo and endosperm. Once the larval stage is complete, the insect pupates inside the damaged nut.

Nature of damage and economic impact. Externally, infested nuts often appear perfectly healthy, masking the extensive internal damage caused by larval tunneling. The primary economic impact involves severe quality degradation, loss of germination viability, and complete unsuitability for consumption or industrial processing. In severe cases, infestation rates can lead to the loss of 60-80% of the produce.

Protection measures. Managing Balanogastris kolae requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

  • Regular collection and destruction of fallen or infested fruits to break the life cycle.
  • Strict phytosanitary protocols for the movement and trade of kola nut materials.
  • Targeted insecticide applications during the peak adult flight periods.
  • Post-harvest treatment, including heat disinfestation or fumigation, to eliminate larvae before storage.
