Systematic position: The green baris (Baris chlorizans) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (true weevils). This insect is known as a specialized pest that targets a wide range of cruciferous plants, impacting both vegetable production and oilseed farming.
Host crops and damage: This pest primarily affects members of the Brassicaceae family, including cabbage, oilseed rape, radish, and mustard. The adults feed on the leaves, creating small, irregular holes. However, the most significant damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the stems and roots of host plants. This internal feeding disrupts nutrient transport and weakens the plant structure significantly.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is typical for curculionids, consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect usually overwinters as an adult in the soil or under organic debris. In the spring, when temperatures rise, the beetles emerge, feed, and mate. Females lay eggs on the base of the stems or near the root zone, where the hatching larvae immediately penetrate the plant tissue.
