Cabbage stem weevil

The cabbage stem weevil (Baris cuprirostris) is a member of the Curculionidae family, commonly known as true weevils. It is a specialized pest that primarily affects plants within the Brassicaceae family, including various vegetables like cabbage, radish, and oilseed crops, making it a significant concern for seed production fields.

The biology of this pest involves overwintering as adults, usually hidden in soil debris or under leaf litter. With the arrival of warm spring temperatures, the adults emerge and begin feeding on young leaves, creating characteristic small, round feeding punctures. Mating occurs shortly after, and females deposit their eggs directly into the plant tissues, specifically targeting the stems and leaf stalks.

The larvae are the most damaging stage, as they tunnel inside the stem, feeding on the internal tissues. This feeding behavior disrupts the transport of water and nutrients within the plant, leading to stunted growth, wilting of the inflorescence, and potential breakage of the flower stalks. In heavy infestations, the reproductive capacity of the plant is severely compromised, resulting in poor seed set or complete crop failure.

Regarding its development, the insect undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The pupal stage typically occurs in the soil, where the mature larvae drop after completing their development within the plant. The timing of these stages is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with most damage occurring during the critical rapid growth phase of the host plants.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Baris cuprirostris. Strategies should include:

• Rigorous weed control to remove alternate hosts like wild mustard or shepherd's purse.
• Deep plowing following the harvest to disrupt overwintering sites.
• Crop rotation to reduce the build-up of local populations.
• Strategic chemical application targeting adults before egg-laying begins, based on regular field scouting.
