The cabbage barid (Baris deplanata) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family (weevils) within the order Coleoptera. This species is widely recognized as a serious threat to cruciferous vegetable production, capable of causing localized but severe outbreaks in commercial fields.

The primary host range of this pest consists of plants within the Brassicaceae family. This includes a wide array of vegetables such as cabbage, radish, turnip, and rutabaga. Furthermore, various cruciferous weeds serve as crucial hosts, allowing the beetle population to survive and reproduce even in the absence of cultivated crops.

The biological cycle of Baris deplanata consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage within soil crevices or beneath debris. Once temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed on foliage before mating. Females deposit eggs into the stem or root crown, where larvae subsequently hatch and feed internally.

The damage caused by the cabbage barid is largely internal and often goes unnoticed until symptoms become severe. Larvae create tunnels inside the stem and root system, which disrupts nutrient transport and reduces plant vigor.
