Cabbage stem weevil (Baris granulipennis) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family of the order Coleoptera. This weevil is recognized for its ability to damage various brassicaceous crops, posing a continuous challenge to both industrial vegetable production and small-scale farming operations.

The host range of Baris granulipennis primarily includes crops such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, and oilseed rape. The pest impacts these plants by directly feeding on the leaves and stems, which often leads to reduced plant vigor and substantial losses in agricultural yield if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of this insect involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The overwintering phase typically occurs in the soil or under debris as adult weevils. With the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, the adults emerge to feed on host plants. Mating follows shortly after, with females laying eggs in punctures made in the stems or leaf petioles.

Damage is largely caused by the larvae, which bore into the stems of the host plants. These internal galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients and water, resulting in wilting, stunting, and in severe cases, the collapse of the plant stem. Early-season infestations can significantly reduce the overall stand density, making management during the early growth stages critical.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for controlling Baris granulipennis should be implemented to minimize damage. Key practices include:

• Maintaining a proper crop rotation cycle to break the life cycle.
• Sanitation, including the destruction of crop residues and related weeds.
• Deep autumn tillage to disrupt overwintering habitats.
