Baris interstitalis

Baris interstitalis is a species of weevil (family Curculionidae, order Coleoptera) that acts as a significant pest for various agricultural crops. It is particularly noted for its specialized feeding habits on plants belonging to the Brassicaceae family, making it a concern for vegetable and oilseed producers.

The host range of this pest primarily includes cruciferous crops such as cabbage, broccoli, radish, rapeseed, and mustard. Due to its cryptic feeding behavior, infestations can often go unnoticed until significant internal damage to the plant structure has already occurred, leading to substantial economic losses.

The life cycle of the weevil usually involves hibernation as adults in the soil or under organic debris. Emergence occurs in the spring, followed by a period of feeding on young plant foliage. Females then deposit eggs into the leaf petioles or stems, where the larvae hatch and begin their destructive feeding inside the plant tissues.

The damage caused by Baris interstitalis is twofold: adult beetles create small feeding punctures on leaves, while larvae hollow out internal stems and petioles. This larval activity disrupts water and nutrient uptake, causing stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the complete collapse or death of the host plant.
