Systematic position: The cabbage stem weevil (Baris laticollis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized insect pest that primarily targets plants within the Brassicaceae family, often causing localized outbreaks in agricultural areas.

Host crops: This pest affects a variety of cruciferous plants, including various cabbage cultivars, radish, turnips, rutabaga, and horseradish. Weedy cruciferous plants often serve as early-season hosts and breeding grounds for the weevil population.

Biology and life cycle: The adult weevils overwinter in the soil or under plant debris. They emerge in early spring to feed on young leaves. Females lay eggs directly into the leaf petioles or the crown of the host plant. The larvae hatch and bore into the plant tissue to feed, eventually pupating in the soil.
