Description

Systematic position: The mint weevil (Baris menthae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly specialized insect that specifically targets plants of the genus Mentha, making it a major concern for commercial peppermint producers.

Host plants and damage: The insect primarily attacks peppermint and other essential oil-bearing mint species. While the adults feed on the leaves and stems externally, the larvae represent the most destructive stage, as they tunnel into the stems, disrupting the vascular system of the plant.

Biology and life cycle: The adult weevils overwinter in the soil or under plant debris. In the spring, they emerge to feed and mate. Females deposit eggs directly into the stem tissue or leaf petioles. The larvae hatch and develop internally within the stem, causing significant structural damage before pupating inside the plant host by late summer.
