Spider weevil
Barypeithes araneiformis
Description
The spider weevil (Barypeithes araneiformis) belongs to the Curculionidae family, within the order Coleoptera. This small beetle is a recognized pest in horticultural and agricultural settings, particularly known for its ability to damage a wide variety of herbaceous plants and ornamental shrubs.
The host range of this species is quite broad. While it is frequently reported on strawberries, it also impacts various garden plants and nursery stock. The adult beetles exhibit nocturnal behavior, hiding during the day in the soil or under debris, which makes direct scouting and monitoring significantly more challenging for growers.
The biological cycle involves an annual generation. Adults overwinter in the soil and emerge in the spring to feed on foliage. After mating, females deposit eggs into the soil near the base of host plants. The larvae, which hatch from these eggs, feed on the roots, causing hidden damage that often goes unnoticed until the plant starts to show signs of wilting.
The damage caused by adults is characterized by notched edges on leaves. However, the root feeding by larvae is often more destructive, especially in younger plants, as it impedes water and nutrient uptake. Heavy infestations can lead to reduced vigor, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the plant.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural practices include regular soil cultivation to disrupt the life cycle and expose larvae to predators. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides during the evening hours when adults are actively feeding on the foliage.
In addition to chemical measures, maintaining weed-free areas is essential, as many weeds act as alternative hosts for the spider weevil. Proper irrigation and fertilization practices can help plants tolerate low-to-moderate infestations, but intensive monitoring remains the cornerstone of successful pest management.
