Strawberry root weevil

Systematic position and description: Barypeithes pellucidus is a species of snout beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae, order Coleoptera. These beetles are generally small and characterized by a snout-like extension of the head. They are primarily nocturnal, which allows them to avoid predation and human detection during the day, making monitoring difficult for farmers.

Host plants: This pest is known to be polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. It is particularly notorious for damaging strawberry plantations and various ornamental shrubs and trees in nursery settings. Besides strawberries, it can infest a variety of herbaceous plants, often causing economic damage to commercial crops and garden landscapes.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The insect overwinters as an adult within the soil profile or under dense leaf litter. Upon the arrival of warmer spring weather, the adults emerge to feed on plant tissues. Females lay their eggs in the soil near the root zones of suitable host plants.

Nature of damage and economic importance: Adults feed on leaf margins, creating irregular notches that reduce photosynthetic capacity. However, the larvae are the most destructive stage; they reside underground, feeding on roots and root hairs. This root damage inhibits water and nutrient uptake, leading to plant wilting, stunted growth, and potential death if the infestation density is high.

Control measures: Management of Barypeithes pellucidus requires an integrated approach. Cultural controls include soil cultivation to disturb larval environments and weed management to eliminate alternative host plants. Chemical control is effective when applied during the night when adults are active. Additionally, soil-applied systemic insecticides can be used to target larvae feeding on root systems.
