Belonolaimus, commonly known as the sting nematode, belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Belonolaimidae. These microscopic roundworms are highly destructive ectoparasites that inhabit the soil, feeding on plant roots with an elongated, needle-like stylet that allows them to pierce root tissues and extract nutrients.

These nematodes cause significant damage to a variety of agricultural crops, including corn, soybeans, cotton, strawberries, and various turfgrasses. They are particularly devastating in sandy soils, as the particle size and pore structure of such soils facilitate the movement of these nematodes toward healthy plant roots.
