Description
The sting nematode (Belonolaimus lineatus) is a significant soil-borne plant parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Belonolaimidae. Unlike endoparasitic nematodes, it remains in the soil as an ectoparasite, feeding on the surface of plant roots throughout its life cycle.
This pest has an extensive host range, including corn, soybeans, cotton, strawberries, and various vegetable crops. Because of its aggressive feeding habits, it can cause devastating losses to agricultural productivity, particularly in fields characterized by sandy soil textures.
Biologically, Belonolaimus lineatus thrives in high-porosity sandy environments that facilitate its movement towards the roots. The life cycle involves several molting stages, beginning with an egg, followed by four larval stages, and ultimately maturing into an adult. Moisture levels in the soil are critical for their survival and reproductive success.
Damage symptoms typically include stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and wilting during peak daylight hours. Upon inspection, the root system is often found to be severely restricted, with stubby, necrotic, and pruned tips. This root damage significantly limits the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients.
Control measures primarily rely on chemical fumigation or systemic nematicide applications before planting. Cultural practices, such as the implementation of non-host crop rotations and the management of weeds, are essential components of an integrated pest management (IPM) program to keep populations below the economic injury level.
