Sting nematode

The Sting nematode (Belonolaimus longicaudatus) belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Belonolaimidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive ectoparasitic nematodes affecting agriculture, particularly in regions dominated by sandy soils which favor its mobility and reproduction.

The host range of this pest is remarkably broad, including economically important crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, strawberries, potatoes, and turfgrasses. Due to its migratory nature, a single population can move across fields, seeking out the most vigorous root systems, which leads to patchy crop development across the entire field.

In terms of biology, Belonolaimus longicaudatus is an obligate parasite. Its most distinguishing feature is an exceptionally long stylet, which allows it to probe deeply into root tissues from the exterior. The lifecycle progresses through four molts, and the nematode can survive in the soil for significant periods if host roots are unavailable, making it a persistent threat in agricultural production.

Symptoms of infestation are often mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or drought stress. The nematode targets the root tips, causing cell destruction that prevents primary root growth. This leads to a stubby, brush-like appearance of the root system. Consequently, affected plants fail to uptake water and nutrients efficiently, leading to stunting, wilting, and in severe cases, complete crop failure.

Management of this nematode requires integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key strategies include:

• Regular soil testing to determine population densities;
• Implementation of long-term crop rotation with non-host species;
• Strategic use of chemical nematicides at planting;
• Maintaining optimal soil fertility to help plants compensate for root damage.
