Belonolaimus lolii

Belonolaimus lolii is a species of ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the family Belonolaimidae, order Tylenchida. These microscopic soil-dwelling pests are known as sting nematodes, which use their highly specialized elongated stylets to penetrate and feed on the root systems of various plant species.

This species thrives in sandy or light-textured soils, which facilitate its movement between soil particles to locate host roots. Its primary hosts include various grass species, particularly those in the Lolium genus, as well as several important agricultural crops like corn, which can suffer significantly from reduced root vigor due to nematode activity.

The life cycle of Belonolaimus lolii occurs entirely in the soil environment. After hatching, the juvenile stages migrate through the soil profile until they locate suitable roots. Once attached, they inject digestive enzymes through their stylet to partially liquefy the cell contents of the roots, which they then ingest as their primary source of nutrition.

Damage caused by this nematode is characterized by stunted root development, often resulting in shortened, thickened, or necrotic root tips. As the root system loses its ability to effectively uptake water and nutrients, the above-ground parts of the plant exhibit symptoms of chlorosis, wilting during peak heat, and overall poor biomass production.

Effective management of Belonolaimus lolii requires an integrated pest management approach. Key strategies include:
