Description
The genus Bembecia belongs to the family Sesiidae, commonly known as clearwing moths. These insects are characterized by their visual mimicry of wasps and bees, which serves as a defensive mechanism. In agriculture, several species of this genus are significant pests that affect perennial forage legumes.
The primary host plant for this pest is sainfoin (Onobrychis). The larvae (caterpillars) are endophytes that burrow into the root system and root collar. Because they reside deep within the plant tissues, they are protected from environmental fluctuations and many conventional contact pesticides.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, several larval instars, pupation, and the adult moth phase. The larvae typically spend at least one year within the host plant's roots, feeding on the inner tissues. Adult moths are diurnal and are most active during warm, sunny days, which facilitates their mating and egg-laying processes.
Damage caused by Bembecia is primarily structural and physiological. By excavating tunnels inside the roots, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the sainfoin plant. This severely stunts growth, reduces the biomass yield, and makes the crops highly susceptible to secondary fungal infections and winterkill.
