Bembecia contracta is a moth belonging to the family Sesiidae, commonly known as clearwing moths. This species is recognized as an agricultural pest that primarily targets specific perennial leguminous plants, with sainfoin (Onobrychis) being the most susceptible crop to its infestations.

The biological development of this pest is highly specialized. The larvae (caterpillars) are endophagous, meaning they live and feed inside the roots and the crown of the host plant. This cryptic lifestyle makes them particularly challenging to manage using traditional surface-applied pesticides once the larvae have already penetrated the plant tissue.

The life cycle typically follows a one-year pattern. Adult moths emerge during the summer months, coinciding with the flowering period of their host plants. After mating, females deposit eggs on the stems or near the root crown, allowing the emerging larvae to burrow immediately into the plant, where they consume the inner tissues throughout their developmental stages.

The damage caused by Bembecia contracta is significant and often overlooked until the plants begin to wilt or die. As the larvae tunnel through the roots, they disrupt the vascular system, causing the formation of galls and secondary infections. This loss of vitality reduces the plant's ability to store nutrients, leading to reduced yields and thinning of the field density over several years.
