Taxonomically, the genus Bombyx belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Bombycidae. While primarily known for sericulture, members of this group or related species can pose significant threats to specific agricultural and forest plant species when population densities reach outbreak levels.

These pests primarily target deciduous trees and shrubs. Common host plants include mulberry trees, oaks, and various fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum species. The larvae feed voraciously on foliage, causing extensive damage to the plant's photosynthetic structure within a short period.

The life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically overwintered on the bark of host plants. Upon hatching in spring, the larvae undergo several instars, consuming large amounts of leaf tissue before spinning their characteristic cocoons and pupating.

Damage symptoms include ragged leaf edges, skeletonized leaves, and complete defoliation. The resulting stress significantly weakens the host tree, leading to reduced fruit yields, poor growth rates, and increased susceptibility to drought, environmental stress, or secondary pest infestations.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. This includes monitoring for egg clusters during winter, using pheromone traps to time interventions, applying biological control agents such as B. thuringiensis, and implementing targeted chemical sprays when larval populations exceed economic threshold levels.
