The wild silkworm (scientific name Bombyx mandarina) is an insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Bombycidae. As the wild progenitor or close relative of the domesticated silkworm (Bombyx mori), it retains the ability to fly and survive independently in nature. This species is often found in regions where mulberry trees grow, functioning as a specialized herbivore.
The primary host plant for this species is the mulberry tree (Morus). The larvae (caterpillars) feed exclusively on the leaves, which can lead to severe foliage damage if the population density is high. In areas dedicated to silkworm farming, Bombyx mandarina is considered a significant pest because it consumes the leaves intended for commercial silk production, thereby reducing crop yields.
The biological life cycle of the pest consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The insects typically overwinter in the egg stage, attached to the bark or branches of the host tree. With the arrival of spring and the budding of mulberry trees, the larvae hatch and proceed through several instars of development, feeding aggressively on the fresh foliage.
The damage caused by these larvae is characterized by the consumption of leaf blades, which can lead to complete defoliation of the tree. This process drastically reduces the tree's ability to perform photosynthesis, ultimately weakening its structural integrity and vigor. Severe infestations also make the trees more susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stressors, reducing the quality and quantity of mulberry fruits.
Effective management and protection strategies include a combination of mechanical, biological, and chemical interventions. Physical removal of egg masses during the dormant winter season is a highly effective prophylactic measure. During the active growing season, monitoring with pheromone traps is recommended to determine the timing of insecticide applications or the release of natural enemies such as parasitic wasps.
