The fig leaf moth (Trilocha varians) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Bombycidae. It has gained attention in recent years as a significant pest affecting various plant species, particularly within the Ficus genus, often causing severe defoliation in fig-growing regions.
The primary host plants for this pest are figs (Ficus carica), although it can also infest other ornamental or wild ficus species. The larval stage, which consists of caterpillars, is the most destructive, as they consume the foliage rapidly, leading to substantial biomass loss and metabolic stress for the tree.
The life cycle of the moth typically involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves. After hatching, the larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously until they reach the pupation stage, where they spin sturdy silk cocoons, frequently attached to the stems or leaves of the host plant.
The damage caused by Trilocha varians is characterized by significant leaf consumption. When larvae are present in high densities, they can strip entire branches of foliage, a condition known as defoliation. This damage hinders the plant's ability to photosynthesize, directly impacting fruit development, growth rates, and the long-term vigor of the host plant.
