Trilocha

Trilocha is a genus of moths belonging to the family Bombycidae. Among the known species, Trilocha varians is recognized as a significant pest affecting mulberry trees (Morus) and other related plant species in various parts of Asia, impacting commercial silk production and tree health.

Taxonomically, this insect is classified within the order Lepidoptera. Members of this genus have evolved to thrive in environments where their host plants are abundant, often causing sporadic but severe outbreaks that require immediate agronomic intervention to prevent economic losses.

The biology of Trilocha involves a complete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of host leaves. The larval stage is the most damaging, as the caterpillars possess voracious appetites, rapidly consuming leaf tissue. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season under favorable climate conditions.

Damage to host plants manifests as widespread defoliation. In early stages, the caterpillars skeletonize the leaves, but as they grow, they consume the entire leaf lamina. This loss of foliage reduces the tree's ability to photosynthesize, leading to reduced growth, susceptibility to secondary pathogens, and total loss of harvestable mulberry leaves for sericulture.

Effective management and control measures include:

• Manual removal and destruction of egg masses and infested leaves in smaller gardens.
