Systematic position: The genus Bradybaena belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Bradybaenidae. These terrestrial air-breathing snails are significant agricultural pests known for their ability to thrive in diverse moist environments across temperate regions.

Crops damaged: Bradybaena are generalist feeders with a wide host range. They frequently attack various vegetable crops including cabbage, lettuce, and leafy greens. Additionally, they often cause severe damage to fruit seedlings, ornamental flowers, and vine crops, especially when young plants are vulnerable during early growth stages.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Bradybaena is highly dependent on environmental moisture levels. They are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, seeking refuge during the day under vegetation, mulch, or soil clods to prevent dehydration. Eggs are typically laid in moist soil, and the species often overwinters in the soil or protected niches to emerge as temperatures rise.

Nature of damage: Damage is caused by the snail's radula, which rasps away plant tissues. This leads to large, irregular holes in leaves, often leaving only the main veins. Furthermore, the secretion of mucus trails not only leaves the plant visually unappealing but also serves as an entry point for various plant pathogens and fungal infections.

Control measures: Successful management involves cultural practices and chemical interventions. Cultural methods include removing debris and weeds to eliminate shelters, as well as managing irrigation to reduce soil surface moisture. Mechanical barriers such as copper tape or abrasive materials like wood ash can deter snails. If infestations persist, authorized molluscicides containing metaldehyde or iron phosphate should be applied according to local regulations.
