Bradybaena weyrichii

Bradybaena weyrichii

Description

Bradybaena weyrichii is a terrestrial gastropod mollusk belonging to the Bradybaenidae family. Characterized by a spherical shell, this snail has adapted to diverse environments, becoming a significant pest in agricultural sectors. Its presence is often associated with humid conditions and the abundance of organic matter in the topsoil.

The host range of Bradybaena weyrichii is extensive, affecting numerous vegetable and ornamental crops. It primarily attacks leafy vegetables, seedlings, fruits, and bulbs. By feeding on tender tissues, the snail causes substantial damage to both early-stage growth and mature plants, often leading to total loss of marketability.

The biological cycle of this mollusk is strictly dependent on moisture levels. Being a hermaphrodite, it reproduces effectively by depositing eggs into moist soil or organic debris. The life cycle involves nocturnal foraging, as the snail avoids direct sunlight to prevent desiccation. They survive winter by hibernating in the soil, emerging once temperatures and humidity levels become favorable.

Damage is characterized by irregular holes in leaves and deep lesions on fruit and stems. The presence of mucus trails is a primary indicator of an infestation. Beyond direct physical destruction, the mollusk creates entry points for various phytopathogens, including fungi and bacteria, which cause additional tissue rot and overall plant decline.

Implementing a successful defense strategy requires integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the following:

  • Maintaining clean cultivation by removing debris and weeds.
  • Tilling the soil to expose and destroy snail egg clusters.
  • Using physical barriers such as copper tape or abrasive materials around planting beds.
  • Applying certified molluscicides based on iron phosphate or metaldehyde when necessary.
  • Encouraging natural predators such as carabid beetles, frogs, and birds on the property.
