Round snail

The Round snail (Bradybaena circulus) is a land snail belonging to the order Stylommatophora and the family Bradybaenidae. These gastropods are recognized as significant pests in agriculture and horticulture, particularly in regions with humid climates. Their morphology includes a compact, rounded shell that allows them to thrive in various habitats, including garden beds and greenhouses.

This snail species feeds on a wide range of botanical hosts. It is especially destructive to leafy vegetables like lettuce and cabbage, strawberries, and various ornamental flowering plants. In nurseries, Bradybaena circulus can cause severe damage to seedlings and young transplants, often leading to total loss of the crops if not managed in the early stages of infestation.

The biological cycle of the snail is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. They are hermaphroditic and lay eggs in moist soil or under organic debris. Their development rate increases during rainy seasons, allowing populations to surge rapidly. During periods of drought or cold, they retreat into protective shelters or bury themselves in the soil to undergo aestivation or hibernation, resuming activity once conditions improve.

The damage caused by Bradybaena circulus is characterized by irregular holes in leaves, stems, and flower petals. They are primarily nocturnal, feeding at night and leaving behind visible trails of mucus that glisten as they dry. Beyond direct tissue consumption, the presence of these pests often facilitates the entry of pathogens, as the damaged areas become vulnerable to secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

Management strategies require a combination of preventative and corrective actions:

• Cultural practices: removing weeds and plant debris to minimize hiding spots and breeding sites.
• Physical barriers: utilizing crushed eggshells, coarse sand, or copper tape around susceptible plant beds to restrict snail movement.
• Trapping: placing containers with beer or fermented bait to monitor and reduce local populations.
• Chemical control: applying certified molluscicides containing iron phosphate or metaldehyde when infestations exceed economic thresholds.
