Striped land snail

Systematic position: The striped land snail (Cathaica fasciola) is a species of terrestrial gastropod mollusk belonging to the family Camaenidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various regions, where it frequently adapts to environments modified by human cultivation.

Crops affected: As a polyphagous pest, the striped land snail feeds on a wide range of plants. Key targets include vegetable crops such as cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, and various legumes. It is particularly destructive to young seedlings and greenhouse crops where humidity levels remain consistently high, providing an ideal habitat for the snails.

Biology and life cycle: The snail’s lifecycle is heavily influenced by environmental moisture and temperature. Eggs are typically laid in moist soil or sheltered under dense vegetation and organic debris, which protects the offspring from desiccation. Development involves distinct stages, with populations peaking during periods of high precipitation or irrigation when nocturnal activity is at its highest.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The snail uses its radula to scrape away leaf tissues, leading to irregular holes and severe defoliation. In severe infestations, Cathaica fasciola can cause the total loss of young plantings. Beyond direct feeding damage, their slime trails leave behind aesthetic contamination and may introduce bacterial or fungal pathogens into the plant tissues through feeding wounds.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include the removal of weed cover and excess mulch that provides daytime hiding spots. Improving soil drainage can also reduce the snail's reproductive success.
