Bryocoropsis laticollis

Bryocoropsis laticollis is a significant species of plant bug belonging to the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. Known primarily as a specialized pest in cocoa-producing regions, particularly across West Africa, it represents a substantial threat to the health and yield of cacao trees. Its status as an agricultural pest is well-documented in entomological literature focusing on tropical crop protection.

The primary host for this insect is the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). Bryocoropsis laticollis feeds on the sap of young stems, tender foliage, and developing pods. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissues, these bugs extract essential nutrients, which disrupts the normal development of the plant and limits the overall agricultural productivity of the plantation.

The life cycle of this species consists of several stages: egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically embedded directly into the host plant tissue by the female. Throughout their development, nymphs and adults remain on the host, moving from one part of the plant to another in search of fresh feeding sites, often leading to rapid colonization of entire orchards.

The damage caused by these bugs is characterized by localized necrotic lesions where the feeding occurred. These wounds often act as infection points for various fungi and pathogens, further exacerbating the damage to the pods. As a result, farmers observe a decrease in both the quality and quantity of harvested cocoa beans, which underscores the importance of timely intervention.
