Forskal's Bulinus

Forskal's Bulinus (Bulinus forskalii) is a species of freshwater air-breathing snails belonging to the family Planorbidae, suborder Basommatophora. This organism represents a significant threat to agricultural operations utilizing hydroponic and aquaponic systems, as it is highly adapted to aquatic environments rich in nutrients.

The biology of this snail is closely linked to water bodies, including irrigation canals and hydroponic reservoirs. Reproduction occurs through laying eggs on the surfaces of submerged plant tissues or equipment walls. The life cycle involves an egg stage, from which microscopic individuals emerge, quickly reaching sexual maturity and allowing the species to dominate closed systems rapidly.

The damage caused involves active feeding on delicate root tissues and young shoots of plants grown in hydroponic setups. Furthermore, Bulinus forskalii is recognized as an intermediate host for dangerous parasites, making its presence unacceptable in commercial crop production, as it poses a significant risk of biological contamination of the harvest.

The pest's harmful impact is manifested not only through the direct physical destruction of root systems, which leads to plant stress and death, but also through the potential transmission of pathogens. Large populations can clog irrigation lines and nutrient delivery channels, disrupting plant nutrition and fostering an environment conducive to harmful bacteria proliferation.
