Imported long-horned weevil
Calomycterus setarius
Description
The imported long-horned weevil (Calomycterus setarius) is a significant agricultural pest within the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Originally native to parts of Asia, this species has become a concern in various regions due to its aggressive feeding habits and adaptability to diverse environmental conditions.
This weevil is a generalist feeder with a wide host range. Adults are known to feed on the foliage of numerous plants, including legumes, ornamental shrubs, broadleaf trees like oak and maple, and various garden vegetables. The larval stage, however, lives underground, where it feeds on plant roots, often causing damage that goes unnoticed until the plant begins to show signs of decline.
The life cycle of Calomycterus setarius typically completes in one year. Adults emerge in early summer and remain active throughout the growing season, feeding and laying eggs in the soil. The species reproduces via parthenogenesis, which contributes to rapid population growth. Overwintering occurs in the larval stage, allowing the insect to survive harsh winter conditions buried deep within the soil profile.
Visible damage by adults is characterized by irregular notches along the leaf margins, often referred to as "leaf scalloping." Heavy infestations can lead to substantial defoliation, reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity. Meanwhile, root feeding by larvae can inhibit nutrient uptake and water absorption, leading to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and potentially the death of the host plant in severe cases.
Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Key recommendations include:
- Maintaining clean cultivation to reduce favorable habitats for larvae.
- Applying insecticides targeted at the adult life stage during peak emergence.
- Monitoring leaf damage early in the season to determine the need for intervention.
- Implementing biological controls, such as beneficial nematodes, to manage soil-dwelling larval populations.
