Description
The coal-boring beetle (Capnodis carbonaria) is a dangerous wood-boring insect belonging to the Buprestidae family of the Coleoptera order. This pest is a major threat to stone fruit orchards, particularly in arid regions, as its larvae target the root system of host plants, leading to severe tree decline.
This beetle species primarily attacks stone fruit crops. The most affected species include apricots, peaches, plums, and almonds. Cherries and sour cherries are also susceptible. The damage is often more pronounced in neglected or stressed orchards where drought conditions prevail, making trees easier targets for infestation.
The life cycle of the beetle is extensive, often lasting one to two years depending on climatic conditions. Adults emerge in late spring and early summer, feeding on young buds and leaves. Female beetles deposit eggs near the base of the tree trunk. The emerging larvae then burrow into the root collar and primary roots to feed on the cambium and wood.
The primary economic damage is caused by the larval stage, which constructs winding galleries filled with sawdust. This activity severely disrupts the nutrient and water flow within the tree. Symptoms of infestation include reduced vigor, yellowing of leaves, leaf drop, and eventually, the complete dieback of the tree if the root system is girdled by the larvae.
Managing the coal-boring beetle requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining optimal soil moisture and proper nutrition are essential to help trees resist attacks. If infestation levels are high, chemical control involving systemic insecticides applied during the peak flight period of the adults is necessary to prevent further egg laying and larval development.
