The flax weevil (Cardipennis rubripes) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family. It is recognized as a specific pest that primarily targets flax plants. Because of its feeding behavior, it can cause economic damage to both fiber and oilseed flax production in temperate climates.
The host plants for this species are limited mostly to the genus Linum. Adult weevils feed on the foliage and tender stems of young plants. The larvae, which exhibit a hidden lifestyle, bore into the stem or seed capsules, making them difficult to spot during the early stages of infestation.
The life cycle of Cardipennis rubripes involves overwintering as adults in the soil or under leaf litter. As spring temperatures rise, the beetles emerge and migrate toward the newly sprouted flax fields. Mating follows, and the female deposits eggs into the plant tissue, allowing the larvae to feed internally throughout their development.

When the larvae feed on the developing seed capsules, the yield potential drops significantly.
