Description
The genus Carmenta belongs to the family Sesiidae, commonly known as clearwing moths, within the order Lepidoptera. These insects are famous for their Batesian mimicry, resembling wasps or hornets. From an agronomic perspective, they are classified as serious stem-boring pests that are notoriously difficult to control due to their cryptic feeding behavior.
This pest affects a wide range of woody and herbaceous plants. Key hosts include commercial crops like blueberries, cranberries, viburnum, and various ornamental landscape plants. The larvae are primarily stem or root feeders, which allows them to bypass external plant defenses and feed on internal tissues undisturbed.
The lifecycle of Carmenta species consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs on the bark or at the base of host stems. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the plant, creating tunnels within the pith or the cambium layer. They remain hidden inside the plant until they are ready to pupate.
The damage caused by Carmenta is primarily structural and physiological. Larval feeding disrupts the vascular system, preventing the flow of nutrients and water. Typical indicators of infestation include wilting branches, stunted growth, exit holes in the stems, and the presence of frass (sawdust-like excrement) around the feeding sites.

- Prune and destroy infested branches or plant parts immediately.
- Use pheromone traps to monitor adult flight periods and population density.
