Minute fungus beetles

The genus Cartodere belongs to the family Lathridiidae (minute fungus beetles) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are commonly associated with damp conditions in storage facilities, where they thrive on various molds and fungi. In agricultural settings, they are considered significant stored-product pests, serving as a biological indicator of poor storage conditions.

These pests target a wide array of stored goods, including grain, seeds, flour, dried fruits, and processed foodstuffs. Their presence is closely linked to the development of microfungi. While they do not consume healthy, dry grain, they rapidly infest material that has become damp or moldy, causing secondary contamination and reducing the market value of the stored produce.

The life cycle of Cartodere species is strictly dependent on moisture and mold growth. Eggs, larvae, and adults are all found in the immediate vicinity of fungal colonies. As the population grows, the insects spread throughout the stored bulk, further encouraging the development of mold through the distribution of spores, which exacerbates the degradation of the product quality.

Damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the presence of frass, larvae, and adult insects within the product. High infestations lead to the formation of clumps of grain and localized heating (self-heating), which can result in significant losses if not addressed. The musty odor produced by their activity is a classic warning sign of potential degradation in siloed grain.

Effective management and control measures focus on physical and environmental prevention:

• Maintaining grain moisture levels consistently below 13-14%.
• Ensuring proper aeration and ventilation within storage silos to prevent condensation.
• Practicing strict warehouse hygiene and removing any moldy residues from previous seasons.
• Cleaning and screening grain to remove fine particles and dust that promote mold growth.
• Utilizing approved fumigants or contact insecticides as a last resort in cases of severe infestation.
