The plaster beetle (genus Corticaria) consists of small beetles belonging to the family Latridiidae. These insects are frequently found in areas where plant products are stored, particularly in damp environments. In an agronomic context, they are not primary pests capable of boring into sound grain; however, their presence is a critical bio-indicator of poor storage conditions and the growth of mold fungi.
Systematically, the genus Corticaria belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Latridiidae. These insects are typically very small, ranging from 1 to 3 mm in length, with a body structure often covered in fine setae. Their presence in a grain bin or warehouse acts as a warning sign that the product is experiencing moisture migration or "hot spots," creating the perfect environment for secondary fungal growth.
The economic impact of the plaster beetle is primarily due to the contamination of stored products rather than direct consumption of the grain. High numbers of beetles and their cast skins can ruin the quality of the product, often rendering it unsuitable for market. Furthermore, since they are attracted to mold, their presence is often associated with the production of mycotoxins, which pose significant health risks to both humans and livestock.
Control measures for the plaster beetle focus on rigorous climate management within storage facilities:
- Ensure proper drying of grain to the target moisture content before storage.
- Regular sanitation of warehouse floors and bins to remove grain dust and spilled debris.
- Maintain consistent airflow and humidity control to prevent mold development.
- Use active aeration systems to prevent localized heating in bulk grain piles.
- Apply authorized fumigation procedures if a severe infestation is detected.
