Fungus beetle

The fungus beetle (Cartodere filiformis) belongs to the Latridiidae family, order Coleoptera. This small, slender beetle is a notorious inhabitant of grain silos, warehouses, and damp areas where stored agricultural products are kept. Its morphology allows it to thrive in narrow spaces and crevices, making manual removal impossible.

This pest is biologically adapted to thrive in high-humidity conditions where mold begins to grow on stored seeds or flour. It is not a primary grain consumer; rather, it is a mycophagous insect, meaning its diet consists primarily of spores and mycelium of various fungi. Consequently, its presence is a clear indicator of poor storage management.

The lifecycle of Cartodere filiformis is highly dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. Adults lay eggs in damp organic debris or on contaminated grains. The larvae are equally mobile and consume mold, facilitating the rapid spread of fungal spores throughout the entire grain mass, which often leads to heating and structural degradation of the stored lot.

The damage caused by this beetle is significant from an economic standpoint. By spreading fungal spores, it triggers the secondary decay of grain, which reduces germination potential and compromises the grain's quality for milling or animal feed. In severe cases, the grain becomes contaminated with mycotoxins, rendering it unfit for trade or consumption.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Stringent sanitation of storage facilities to eliminate residual dust and old grain particles.
• Strict control of moisture content in stored grains, ideally keeping it below 13-14% to inhibit mold growth.
• Regular fumigation of warehouses with appropriate registered insecticides.
• Installation of advanced ventilation systems to maintain stable temperature levels and prevent moisture condensation.
