Plaster beetle

Plaster beetle (scientific name: Cartodere constricta) is a small insect belonging to the Latridiidae family. These beetles are primarily recognized as storage pests that thrive in humid environments where mold and fungi have begun to develop. They are commonly found in grain silos, warehouses, food processing facilities, and occasionally in damp residential areas.

The diet of the plaster beetle consists mainly of microscopic mold spores and mycelium. While they do not typically feed on dry, healthy seeds, their presence is an indicator of poor storage conditions. They infest a variety of stored goods, including cereals, flour, dried fruits, and processed animal feeds, often compromising the hygienic quality of the entire stock.

The life cycle of Cartodere constricta is highly influenced by environmental factors such as moisture and temperature. In optimal conditions, which include high relative humidity levels, they can rapidly complete their reproductive cycle. Adults are small, elongated insects that are highly mobile, allowing them to disperse quickly across large storage facilities once an infestation is established.

The primary damage caused by these beetles is the degradation of the product's quality. They act as vectors for fungal spores, facilitating the spread of mold which leads to grain heating and spoilage. This activity not only causes direct weight loss but also imparts a musty odor and taste to the goods, rendering them unfit for commercial sale or human consumption.
