Hairy fungus beetle

Corticaria pubescens, commonly known as the hairy fungus beetle, belongs to the family Latridiidae, order Coleoptera. These small beetles are widely recognized as secondary pests of stored products. They are commonly found in warehouses, granaries, and damp storage facilities where moisture levels are sufficient to support the growth of fungi, which serve as their primary food source.

This species primarily infests stored grains, pulses, flour, dried fruits, and various plant-based products. Unlike primary pests that penetrate healthy kernels, Corticaria pubescens thrives in environments where spoilage has already begun or where humidity levels allow for mold proliferation. They are particularly troublesome in damp environments where poor sanitation persists.

The biology of this pest is fundamentally linked to fungal activity. As mycophagous insects, both larvae and adults feed on the spores and hyphae of various molds. The life cycle comprises the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Under favorable conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures, the insects can rapidly complete their life cycle, leading to significant infestations within moist pockets of stored commodities.

The damage caused by the hairy fungus beetle is twofold. First, they physically consume and degrade the quality of the stored material. Second, and perhaps more importantly, they contaminate the grain with frass and dead insect parts, which negatively affects the market value of the produce. Their presence often indicates that the storage conditions are improper, potentially leading to further deterioration due to fungal growth.

Control measures are primarily preventive and focus on moisture management. To effectively manage this pest, it is essential to keep the moisture content of grain below the levels that support mold growth. Key strategies include:

• Cleaning warehouse surfaces to remove debris and residual dust.
