Juniper scale

Carulaspis juniperi

Description

Juniper scale (Carulaspis juniperi) is a destructive sap-sucking pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a common insect found on various evergreen plants, where it secures itself to the foliage and stems under a protective waxy covering, making it difficult to detect in early stages.

This pest primarily attacks members of the Cupressaceae family. The most susceptible hosts include juniper, arborvitae (Thuja), cypress, and false cypress (Chamaecyparis). Infestations are particularly problematic in nurseries, parks, and residential landscapes, where they can rapidly spread to healthy specimens.

The life cycle of the juniper scale is generally univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Fertilized adult females overwinter under their protective scales on the needles. In late spring, they lay eggs, which hatch into mobile crawlers. These crawlers disperse across the plant, eventually settling on needles to feed and begin secreting their own protective wax covers.

Damage symptoms include yellowing, needle drop, and overall stunted growth of the plant. In cases of severe infestation, the needles may turn brown, and branches may die back, leading to a general decline in the plant's health and aesthetic appeal. The presence of numerous tiny, white, circular scales on the foliage is the primary diagnostic sign.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for effective control:

  • Monitoring for the emergence of crawlers in the spring and early summer.
  • Applying horticultural oils to smother the insects during the dormant season.
  • Utilizing systemic insecticides to target the pest through the plant's sap.
  • Pruning out heavily infested branches to reduce the overall population pressure.
  • Maintaining optimal plant health through proper watering and soil nutrition to help trees withstand attacks.
