Catoptes obliquesignatus is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Often referred to as the broad-nosed weevil, this pest is recognized for its significant impact on various agricultural sectors. Its ability to thrive in diverse environments makes it a persistent challenge for plant health management in affected regions.

The pest targets a wide range of host plants, including grasses, various cereal crops, and some vegetable varieties. The damage is twofold: adult beetles feed on the margins of leaves, causing irregular notches, while the larvae dwell in the soil, actively feeding on the root systems. This dual attack significantly reduces plant vigor and overall yield potential.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited in the soil near the host plant. The larvae emerge and descend into the soil, where they consume small roots during their development. Adults generally emerge in spring, with their activity levels peaking under favorable temperature and moisture conditions, making them particularly damaging during the early vegetative stages.

Diagnostic signs include the characteristic notched edges on foliage caused by adults, which is a key indicator for early identification. Larval damage is more insidious, often appearing as patches of stunted or wilting plants. Farmers should monitor fields for uneven growth patterns, as this is often a consequence of root system impairment caused by high larval densities in the soil.

Effective control strategies require an integrated approach to break the pest's life cycle. This includes crop rotation to prevent the buildup of soil-dwelling larvae, as well as tillage practices that expose larvae to surface predators and weather elements. When threshold levels are exceeded, the application of targeted insecticides or biological control agents may be necessary to protect the crop yield.
